But the river has it’s downside too. For years, the Los Angeles River was a drainage ditch along most of its 51 mile length, and large parts have been covered in concrete. The Los Angeles River became heavily polluted from agricultural and urban runoff over the last century, negatively impacting both residents' health and the environ...

[4K] Venice Beach Canals in Los Angeles, California USA - Walking Tour 🎧 Binaural Sound
The Venice Canal Historic District is embedded in the residential Venice suburb of Los Angeles, California. The historic district is noteworthy for possessing man-made wetland canals, built in 1905 by developer Abbot Kinney as part of his Venice of America. Kinney sought to recreate the appearance and feel of Venice, Italy, in coastal Los Angeles County.
By the 1920s, with cars quickly gaining popularity, the canals were viewed by many as outdated, and as a result a number of canals were filled in 1929 to make room for paved roads. By 1940 the remaining canals had fallen into disrepair, and the sidewalks were condemned by the city. The district remained in poor condition for more than 40 years; numerous proposals to renovate the canals failed due to lack of funding, environmental concerns...

By 1940 the remaining canals had fallen into disrepair, and the sidewalks were condemned by the city. The district remained in poor condition for more than 40 years; numerous proposals to renovate the canals failed due to lack of funding, environmental concerns, and disputes as to who should bear the financial responsibility. The canals were finally renovated in 1992; they were drained, and new sidewalks and walls were built. The canals re-opened in 1993, and have become a desirable and expensive residential section of the city.
The residential district surrounding the remaining canals was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. However, in recent years, there has been extensive renovation work on many of the old houses, and many large, modern houses have been built.
The water enters the canals through sea gates in the Marina Del Rey breakwater, and again in Washington Boulevard. They open at low tide to drain most of the water, and at high tide they are closed, trapping the water for about three days, before being refreshed again.

A tour of the last remaining canals in Venice Beach California. Many of the streets in Venice were once canals, and only one small section of canals are still around today. Officially known as the "The Venice Canal Historic District" it's comprised of six canals, approximately one and a half miles in length, and fifty feet in width, and are laid out in a grid. Nine footbridges provide access within the canals. The canals’ ocean water comes from the Marina del Rey and is controlled by tidal gates. The Canals are listed on the National and City of Los Angeles Registry of Historical Places.
The canals were built in 1905 as a private real estate development, Short Line Beach Venice Canals Subdivision No. 1, to capitalize on Abbot Kinney’s “Venice of America,” a canal development and amusement center to the north. Both canal projects, built with a lot of speed and too little sturdy construction had fallen into disrepair by the early 1920’s and all the canals were scheduled to be filled in, but the Venice canals were spared. The canals are a designated wildlife preserve where you can see Herons, Egrets, Mergansers, Coots, Cormorants, Sea Gulls, Pelicans, sometimes the Least Tern, and domesticated Mallard ducks.

The Los Angeles River is often thought of as a huge concrete eyesore. Not anymore, at least not after you join Huell for this special 1 hour adventure where Huell literally travels down the miles of river bed stopping along the way to talk to some of the many people working hard to bring our river back to its natural state. He'll see the animals that call the river home, he'll learn about the many 'pocket parks' which connect the community back to the river allowing local families to relax and enjoy the view, and he'll get the scoop on what local government is doing on, in, under, and around the river to make clean and green.
